Escape from the Crowd: Fethiye’s Secret Bays Only Accessible by Boat
Aquarium, Tarzan, Cold Water, Butterfly Valley and the “Insiders” Route
In Fethiye, after a certain point, the road ends and the sea route begins. You know those untouched spots where you open the map and say, “That bay looks legendary, but isn't there a road?” … Well, they are usually the real stars of a Fethiye holiday.
If you are overwhelmed by the crowds in Ölüdeniz or if you have switched to the mode “I want to see real turquoise today”, the solution is simple: Setting sail. Because the Fethiye gulf and its surroundings are full of bays that are inaccessible by land (or “accessible but torturous”). In these bays, there are no horns, no exhaust fumes, no beach fights… Often there is only the sound of waves and the smell of pine.
In this guide, rather than the “classic stops known by everyone on the 12 Islands tours”, I describe the bays that feel more special and that most people miss on their first time. In the last section, we will clarify the boat choice: public tour, private boat, or short “dolmuş boat”?
Decide in 30 Seconds: What Are You Looking For?
- 🐟 Glass-like water + snorkeling: Aquarium Bay
- 🧗 Rocky, adventure feeling: Tarzan Bay
- ❄️ Ice-cold spring water: Cold Water Bay
- 🦋 Giant rocky walls + iconic view: Butterfly Valley
- ⛵ Escape from crowds: Around Turunç Pınarı
Part 1 — 3 Bays That Make You Say “Wow” When You Enter the Sea
1) Aquarium Bay: “You can see the bottom even without a mask”
One of the places that lives up to its name. You think people are exaggerating about this place, but when you go, you say “okay, it’s true”.
- How is the sea? The water is glass-like most days. The light-coloured ground at the bottom increases clarity.
- Best experience: Throw your snorkel / goggles in your bag, it really makes a difference.
- Who loves it? Those who say “Let me see the bottom even from the surface” and children.
2) Tarzan Bay: Where Green Jumps into Blue
To love Tarzan Bay, you need to turn off the “sandy beach” expectation. This place gives more of a rocky + forest + jumping into the sea feeling.
- How is the sea? It turns emerald green (forest reflection). There is no beach, entry is from the boat/rocks.
- Caution: Sea shoes are good. Jumping from ropes etc. don't do it if it's not safe.
- Who loves it? Adventure seekers, those who want a “cove experience, not a beach”.
3) Cold Water Bay: “Natural Air Conditioning” Inside the Sea
The reaction of those experiencing Cold Water Bay for the first time: “One moment I was cold, one moment I warmed up.” The cold spring water mixing with the sea comes like medicine in the summer heat.
- Feature: Due to spring water, a “cold wave” is felt in places.
- Who loves it? Those who want to cool down, those who are overwhelmed by heat.
Part 2 — Iconic Stop and Boat Choice
4) Butterfly Valley: Its Sea and Walls
You see Butterfly Valley in photos and say “okay, nice”… But the feeling of entering between those high rocky walls while approaching from the sea is completely different.
Why from the sea? The path descending from land is steep and risky. Access from the sea is safe and comfortable. The beach can generally be pebbly, sea shoes are useful.
5) Around Turunç Pınarı: The “Insiders” Route
Quiet bays not on the standard route of public tours, mostly visited by private boats. Less noise, more peace.
Boat Choice: Which Method is for You?
1. Daily Public Tour
Economical and easy. However, it can be crowded and the route is fixed.
2. Private Boat
Provides flexibility and privacy. Cost/performance is good for crowded groups.
3. Dolmuş Boat
Practical for going to a single point (e.g. Butterfly Valley) and returning.
What to Throw in the Bag?
- 🤿 Snorkel / Sea Goggles
- 👟 Sea Shoes
- ☀️ Sun Cream & Hat
- 📱 Water-resistant phone case
